Gispen armchair 1401 Wim Rietveld green

Gispen armchair model 1401 by Wim Rietveld

name: armchair model 415, later model 1401
designer: Wim Rietveld
manufacturer: Gispen, the Netherlands
design year: 1954

“Armchair with straight back and seat on a steel frame. The back and the seat are both made of lacquered sheet steel and have a removable cover with a foam filling. The chair has two bakelite armrests. The armchair could be fitted with a wool upholstery in five colors from the De Ploeg weaving mill. The fabric covers were removable. They had cardboard strips on the edges, which were secured in the bent edges of the sheet steel seat and back. The back therefore remained unclad; the steel could be seen here. Around 1960 the number was changed to no. 1401 and the armchair was supplied exclusively with a graphite black lacquered frame.

Armchair no. 415 belonged to a series of ‘furniture for the simple interior’, which was introduced in the mid-fifties. The armchair was first shown at the 10th Triennial of Milan (1954) and was awarded a gold medal there.” text: Stichting Gispen Collectie, vertaling NLD
